I’m liking the oiling of the body part ~ sounds kind of slippery

Jessica Jessica
Anointing the body with oil is called Abhyanga. Heated oil is massaged into the body; often before bathing.

What is Ayurveda?

Ayurveda is a healing system that emphasizes maintaining a lifestyle; that aims to keep the doshas in balance with the person’s constitutional type; which in turn, maintains health in mind, body, and soul.

Furthermore, illness is believed to be a result of an imbalance in the doshas. However, it is caused by a number of factors such as;  emotional trauma, poor diet or an accumulation of toxins.

Nevertheless, by encouraging patients to be responsible for their health; Ayurvedic practitioners tailor lifestyle and treatments; according to the uniqueness of the individuals physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual lifestyle; as well as environmental conditions.

The Vedic writings were so wise and timeless. However, I think this is much more where Western medicine should be heading.

Jessica Jessica
I agree, it’s a very holistic approach to health with a focus on prevention.

Okay Girls! But what on earth is a Dosha?

A Dosha is one of the three energies that are carried in the body and determine both physiological and personality traits. However, in general the doshas characterize the three main mind/body types. As a matter of fact, if the Doshas become unbalanced; then both physical and mental disorders can ensue.

Furthermore, the lotus flower is a symbol used in Ayurvedic practice; and symbolizes one of the 8 Ayurvedic disciplines: internal medicine, surgery, toxicology, psychiatry, gynecology, pediatrics, geriatrics, and sexology; as well as treatment of the ears, nose, throat, eyes, jaws, and teeth.

Ayurveda is based on the principle that we heal from within

Nonetheless, it assists nature in a positive way; by supporting beneficial processes to reinstate and maintain proper balance of the doshas.

By decreasing excess doshas (energy); the elimination of wastes from the body can happen more quickly; and improve the patients resistance to disease.

Moreover, you will undergo a full analysis of body; (pulse, tongue, iris, face, skin, urine and stools), mind, spirit and environment.  However, particular attention is paid to the pulse diagnosis; which is an art form in itself;  and, in some cases, may be the only form of diagnosis used.

Most treatments consist of; medicinal plants (fresh, dries or naturally extracted), strict dieting, exercise, hydrotherapy; and specialized body massages that drain the lymph and move toxins.

I often check my pulse; and if I can find it then I know I’ve got a chance

In Ayurvedic therapy there are three dosha types:-
  • 1) Vata Dosha: Moreover, this is an energy that controls physiological actions in the body that are associated with motion. Nonetheless, these include; circulation, blinking of the eyes, pulse rate or heart beat and breath control. If the Vata Dosha is in balance you will experience creativity and vitality
However, if the Vata Dosha is not in balance this can manifest in fear and anxiety.
  • 2) Pitta Dosha: Is an energy that controls the metabolic systems of the body. These include digestion and absorption, nutrition and bodily temperature. Moreover, if the Pitta Dosha is in balance you will experience contentment and intelligence
If the Pitta Dosha is not in balance this can manifest in ulcers and anger
  • 3) Kapha Dosha: Is an energy that controls the growth of the body. As a matter of fact, this energy provides water to all body parts, moisturizes the skin, and helps in the maintenance of the immune system. If the Kapha Dosha is in balance you will experience love and forgiveness.
If the Kapha Dosha is not in balance, you could experience  insecurity and envy

Once your constitutional dosha  type is discovered

A personalized diet and cleansing plan will be created to maximize your body’s healing energies; and build your immune system.

This system of healing is reasonably new to the West

Although, it has been growing rapidly in popularity. However, it is extremely supportive to maintain good health.

Meanwhile, contact your family practitioner and find out if they do referrals for Ayurvedic therapy; or alternatively do an internet search for qualified practitioners in your area.

Ayurveda is a consciousness based approach to health, a spiritual medicine
recognizing the phenomenal intelligence in every grain, every seed, all life
and every living thing.
